Frequently Asked Questions About Cremation & Funeral Services
This FAQ page provides clear answers to common questions about water cremation, traditional cremation, and funeral services at Cremation Through Water & Funeral Services. It is designed to help families understand their options, processes, and next steps with straightforward, respectful information during a difficult time.
What happens to the water after the process?
The water is rich in natural nutrients and environmentally safe. In many cases, it is returned to the earth and used in ways that support new life.
Is the water safe and free of disease?
Yes. The water cremation process uses heat and alkalinity to gently break down your loved ones body and sterilize the water. Any disease or pathogens are completely neutralized, leaving water that is clean, safe, and beneficial to the environment.
Is water cremation an acid-based or toxic process?
No. Water cremation is not acid-based and does not use toxic chemicals.
The process uses water and a gentle alkaline solution—similar in composition to substances commonly found in everyday products like soap. These elements work together with warmth and time to support a natural return to the elements.
After the process is complete, the remaining water is clean, sterile, and environmentally safe. It contains no DNA, tissue, or harmful substances and can be responsibly returned to the environment.
Is my loved one “boiled” during the water cremation process?
No. Water cremation does not involve boiling.
The process uses warmth, not extreme heat, in a carefully controlled environment. The temperature is significantly lower than flame cremation and is designed to gently accelerate a natural, water-based process rather than burn or boil.
Many families find comfort in knowing that water cremation avoids fire entirely and instead relies on a calm, controlled method that reflects nature’s own way of returning to the elements.
Do I receive cremated remains like traditional cremation?
Yes — and often more. Water cremation returns approximately 20% more remains than flame cremation, allowing everyone in your family to share remains. The remains are lighter in color because they are never exposed to fire, allowing the entire body to be honored without burning.
How long does the water cremation process take?
The process itself typically takes 4–6 hours. At Cremation Through Water & Funeral Services, families may also choose to be present and witness the process if that feels meaningful to their grieving journey.
Is water cremation more expensive than flame cremation?
While water cremation does typically cost more than flame cremation, it is certainly not double the cost like many may initially think. Our mission is to keep this gentler, environmentally responsible choice as accessible as possible. Water cremation generally costs 25–35% more than traditional flame cremation due to specialized equipment and longer processing times.
Do you also offer traditional flame cremation?
Yes. While our primary focus is cremation through water, we understand that every family’s needs, preferences, and circumstances are different. For those who prefer traditional flame cremation we are able to provide that service as well.
Our care team is happy to discuss all available options and help you choose what feels right for your family.
If my loved one has already purchased traditional flame cremation, is it too late to switch without losing my investment?
No, it’s absolutely not too late to switch. There may however be a difference in cost depending on your initial pre-need policy purchased, as flame cremation is typically about 25-35% less expensive than water cremation. Give us a call and we’ll be happy to help review your specific
pre-need policy and help streamline the process to convert it to water if you’d like.
How will I know when my loved one’s cremated remains are ready?
Our care team will always notify you directly when your loved one’s cremated remains are ready. For families who would like additional transparency, we also offer a secure QR code that allows you to view status updates and confirm when remains are available for pickup.
Why does water cremation feel gentler than flame cremation?
Water cremation avoids flame, smoke, and combustion altogether. Instead, it relies on water, warmth, and time to carry out the process with quiet dignity and care.
Some families are drawn to water cremation for its gentle process and environmental considerations.
Can you help if my loved one passes away outside Northeast Florida?
Yes. While our primary service area includes Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, and St. Augustine, we can assist families throughout Florida and Georgia and help coordinate arrangements nationwide when needed.
